Her Spark was Always There – SPAN Helped it Shine
Emily’s journey with Smart Waikato’s SPAN Bridging the Gap programme began when her dad referred her, hoping it would be what she needed to regain her spark. At the time, Emily was withdrawn, and anxious – a result of prolonged school bullying. Her dad saw SPAN as a stepping stone to rebuild her self-esteem and reconnect with her future.
SPAN guided Emily through a transformative journey. With every interaction with the programme, it helped her come out of her shell. From getting her licence with Blue Light, to working through a career development programme, Emily began to thrive.
Emily’s personal growth was massive, she went from being socially anxious and shy, to becoming a strong and confident young woman.
Later in the programme Emily was coached on building a standout CV and sharpening her interview skills. Through her renewed confidence and clear sense of direction Emily even cold called employers in her most desired pathway – signwriting.
This determination paid off and when a junior position opened up, with SPAN coach support and advocacy during the application process, Emily landed the role.
Although she had limited experience, it was her drive and attitude which shone through, resulting in the employer taking a chance on her.
When Emily found out she had won the role she was overjoyed and texted her SPAN support people,
“All the programmes and stuff have been more help than I can even begin to express thanks for”.
Emily’s story is a powerful reminder of the impact a caring, structured and long-term programme can have on a young person’s life.
With each interaction and carefully designed step, SPAN helped reignite Emily’s belief in herself and her future.
“The SPAN programme was a lifesaver for us as a family,” said Emily’s dad. “The team’s gentle, long-term approach was exactly what Emily needed. She totally blossomed. We’re incredibly grateful to the team and would recommend it to any family struggling to motivate their young people.”
