Principal for a Day

Principal for a Day is the flagship Smart Waikato project connecting Waikato business and community leaders with school principals.

Since 2007 the initiative has given regional business leaders the opportunity to “shadow” a secondary or intermediate school principal for a day and gain an insight into the challenges they face.

Principal for a Day leaders build relationships with schools in a number of ways including mentoring the board, staff or students, offering work experience to students, hosting staff visits and leading other Smart Waikato projects such as Joining the Dots and Get on the Bus!

About 30 Waikato leaders and schools took up the Principal for a Day mantle last year and organisers are hoping this year’s event will attract more support than ever.

The initiative is designed to bring together schools and the business world at a leadership level so closer links can be forged between the two sectors.

This creates opportunities for both school and business to benefit and gives teachers professional development opportunities at a business level.

Principal for a Day project manager Sally Birch is encouraging business leaders and schools to support this year’s event.

“This is a valuable experience for everyone. The business leaders experience the challenges and triumphs faced by schools and principals can forge a relationship with a potential mentor. The hope is the partnership becomes a lasting one,” Sally said.

A VIP reception for participants will be held on August 8 this year, in conjunction with the Young Enterprise Scheme trade fair.

“We will also be launching an exciting new regional programme geared at transitioning mid and highly-skilled students into cadetship and employment. This is a not-to-be-missed event.”
